On May 30, 2025, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng, and his wife Wang Dan, joined members of the Chinese community from both sides of the Taiwan Strait in the Washington, D.C. area to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival and share in festive traditions and heartfelt connections. Minister Counselor Qiu Wenxing was also in attendance.
Ambassador Xie remarked that Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family.
"No force can sever the bonds of blood and kinship that unite us, nor can anyone obstruct the historical trend toward China’s reunification," Ambassador Xie said.
He noted that compatriots across the Strait share a common ancestry, culture, and history, as well as a shared responsibility for the Chinese nation and a collective aspiration for a better future.
Ambassador Xie expressed concern over certain anti-China forces in the United States that have condoned and supported “Taiwan independence” elements in taking reckless actions, threatening peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He also criticized the U.S. for its arbitrary imposition of tariffs, which he said have severely undermined the well-being of people around the world.
In response to a recent U.S. State Department announcement regarding the revocation of visas for Chinese students, Ambassador Xie said the Chinese Embassy had lodged strong representations with the U.S. side at the earliest opportunity and would continue to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students and overseas Chinese.
Highlighting the cultural significance of the Dragon Boat Festival, Ambassador Xie said the dragon boat race embodies a spirit of determination, teamwork, and striving for excellence, also reflecting the enduring resilience and unity of the Chinese nation.
“With more than 1.4 billion Chinese people rowing in unison,” he declared, “there is no storm we cannot weather, no destination we cannot reach. I hope our overseas compatriots will draw inspiration from the ‘dragon boat spirit’ and sail boldly forward on the path to national reunification and rejuvenation.”
